Violence in Diepsloot as unrest continues

Violence in Diepsloot reached their peak on Thursday (23/01/2020) when residents went door to door – store to store demanding those not from South Africa to produce identification documentation.

Some residents in Diepsloot say they know for sure it’s foreign nationals carrying out crime in the area. Five people were arrested in connection with the murder of a police officer in Diepsloot.

Police did confirm that three of the five arrested were from another African country. After the initial chaos –  calm was restored as police squashed tensions.

Ten people have been killed in Diepsloot over recent weeks. Residents in the area have mainly pointed their fingers at those living in South Africa without any identification documentation.

Today with John Perlman took a focus on the unrest in Diepsloot; and spoke to Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi on his plan of action, and also had a conversation with a community leader and a representative for the foreign shop owners.
