The Drive-Thru Celebrates a Year on the Airwaves
For the past year, Kaya FM’s The Drive Thru has become a popular way for sports fanatics to get their weekly fix. Co-hosted by award-winning journalists Mosibodi Whitehead and Sandile van Heerden, the show combines great music with light-hearted fun conversations, as well as the lifestyle aspects of sport. Each week also sees the hosts in conversation with some of the most interesting personalities in South Africa, with an upbeat music selection helping listeners ease into the weekend.
To mark the momentous occasion of the show being on the airwaves for a year on the 30thof August 2019, the team took the Drive Thru celebrations to the McDonald’s Birch Acres drive thru in Tembisa, where they were joined by learners from Mvelaphanda Primary School, the school that Kaya FM has adopted as part of their Corporate Social Investment Programme.
“Giving is better than receiving, so we thought, why not share our birthday with others?” commented Mosibodi Whitehead, adding that Mvelaphanda was the natural choice because of the school’s relationship with the station.
As one of the most popular fast food franchises in the country, McDonald’s came to the party in a big way where they treated the learners to meals and goodies the whole afternoon. With several of their own outreach programmes and initiatives, giving back is a major part of the company’s story. In an interview on the Drive Thru Jo-Ann de Wet, McDonalds’ Chief Operations Officer talked about one of the company’s legacy programmes which goes back to McDonalds’ sponsorships at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This is just one of the ways in which the company has continued to engage with the communities of South Africa in a manner that resonates with the culture of the country.
“What appeals to us from a domestic perspective is that even though we are in all 9 provinces, we have close to 300 restaurants. I think we recognize that if we don’t grow the footprint, societies don’t thrive and if we can’t create opportunities for job employment, people can’t thrive, and the brand can’t thrive in our effort to build a better community and a better South Africa”.
The celebrations reached its peak with a special performance by South Africa rapper, Reason. Fans of the show will be familiar with the Drive Thru’s theme song, a flipped version of the rapper’s high rotating Azania. Reflecting on the show’s first birthday Sandile van Heerden said, “It’s such a privilege to be able to celebrate our one year birthday. It feels like just yesterday when we sat in a boardroom planning the show and preparing to pitch the idea to our MD Greg Maloka. Mosibodi and I may be the faces of the show, but so many people behind the scenes are pouring their blood, sweat and tears into this show. And to our listeners thank you for the love and support! You are the reason we do this”.
