The South African post office has managed to transfer at least 1.3 million social grant beneficiaries from the CPS Sassa card to the new card issued by Postbank. This comes as the September 30 deadline for phasing out the old SASSA cards draws nearer.
Post Office CEO Mark Barnes says the swapping of cards is not a lengthy process and has encouraged all beneficiaries to make the switch as soon as possible. Speaking on Breakfast with David this morning – Barnes said the post office can reach up to five times more places than merchant banks
In 2014 – the Constitutional Court found that the contract Sassa signed with CPS was invalid. Sassa was forced to extend the contract in April 2017 after it emerged that the agency was unable to secure alternative payment system. The goal now is to have as many people as possible on the new cards before the end of August.
Barnes says employees were deployed to temporary card swop sites throughout the country to assist beneficiaries
