How to repair your hairline after a winter of protective styling

Protective styling is the holy grail for black hair, especially the natural, unrelaxed textures. The protective hairstyles are meant to give your hair a break from over-styling during winter when your hair is its most vulnerable. With your hair tucked away in braids or under a wig for six weeks at a time, you end up manipulating it less than you would have were it not protectively styled. Your hair is not being subjected to heat or insistent combing.

But there’s a sneaky side-effect to continuous protective styling. Traction alopecia, which is characterised by hair loss along the hairline, temples and on the nape. So you may retain length as a result of protective style but your hairline might end up suffering. So how do you repair your hairline?

Don’t wait until the damage is done! You can repair your hairline as you go. If you ’ve got a braided hairstyle and you know that leads to you losing hair on your hairline after a while, start doing your remedies while you have the protective hairstyle. Would the kids in your life sit through and take tight braiding? Be like them when it comes to your protect styles, just because something is tight, doesn’t mean the style will last longer but it definitely means it will lead to discomfort and some hair loss.

Oils are your friend! The only thing left is to find out which oil works best for you and when it comes to this particular problem. One of the popular hair oils that can help you repair your hairline is black castor oil. Other popular, natural hair oils are avocado oil, jojoba oil, argan oil and almond oil.

It’s important to keep your hair hydrated and moisturised during protective styling. Neglecting to do this will make your hair vulnerable to breakages. Through the winter of protective styles, nourish your scalp, hairline, temples and nape. Whichever summer style you choose, remember to keep your hair and scalp well-taken care of.
