Radio icon and the host of Kaya FM’s The World Show, Nicky Blumenfeld, recently received the Order of Princess Magogo for her contribution to the development of indigenous arts and heritage in South Africa and globally. Having been on Kaya FM since its inception in 1997, Blumenfeld is much-loved for her weekly show which focuses on promoting both young and established musicians across the African diaspora.
Nicky B was first tipped for the award in 2019 during her fellowship at the prestigious Cité Internationale des Arts while working on her research project Musical Migration, which focused on the significance of South African music on France’s cultural landscape. She joins a long list of heritage practitioners who have received the same accolade previously including Prof. Joseph Shabalala, Dr Sibongile Khumalo, Dr Phillip Tabane, Nothembi Mkhwebane and more.
“I am so honoured to be a recipient of The Value of Culture Foundation’s Order of Princess Magogo. I never imagined that I would be publicly recognized for what I believe is my calling and life’s work – and in this case, specifically for my contribution to the development of indigenous arts and heritage. I give specific thanks to Mbuso Khoza, The Wits School of Art and Kaya FM, for giving me the platform to share this valuable treasure trove of music that deserves to be heard; something I have done proudly for the past 23 years!” Blumenfeld commented on her accolade.
“We found it appropriate to award Nicky Blumenfeld because of her contributions and work in taking unknown gems from the country and the continent and putting them on the airwaves. Princess Magogo was a teacher, a praise singer, and a community commentator around heritage. Nicky B is of the same calibre”, commented Mbuso Khoza, the founder of the Value of Culture Foundation, who established the award in 2017.
Listen to The World Show with Nicky B every Sunday between 18:00-22:00.
