What does free universal health care mean in South African context and can we make it work? Last week, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi released the NHI Bill along with the Medical Schemes Amendment Bill. These announcements are the government’s first legislative steps to set up one health service for all South Africans.
Consumers who are with private medical schemes are, understandably, unhappy with the update. Some parties have also criticised this step by the government. But what exactly does the NHI Bill and the Medical Schemes Amendment Bill mean for ordinary South African both with and without private medical aid?
