Mosibodi Whitehead in conversation with the Springbok’s Sbu Nkosi

For many sportsmen who have achieved something truly amazing, they will often liken the event to an out of body experience. Think Springbok wing James Small’s courageous tackle on his All Blacks opposite number Jonah Lomu in the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Adam Bacher’s gravity-defying catch to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar in the Proteas’ 1996 test series against India or Benni McCarthy’s shibobo through the legs of Danish keeper Peter Schmeichel for Bafana Bafana’s first ever World Cup goal. Those are all unforgettable moments when time seemed to stand still.

Just a few weeks ago Sbu Nkosi produced another one of those magical moments when he scored one of the best tries you’ll ever see. Having played just once for the Springboks in 2019 going into that final pre-World Cup test match on home soil at Loftus, Nkosi knew full well that his place in the final squad was in jeopardy. The Sharks wing needed to deliver a special performance just six days before SARU Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus named his final squad.

Nkosi says he visualised the test against the Pumas all week and after he crossed the whitewash for his first try towards the end of the first half, he can scarcely remember what happened next. The second try just after half time that saw Nkosi step two players on his way to securing a place in Japan will go down in history as a great sporting moment. He spoke to us about this moment on the 20th of August 2019. Listen to the conversation here.
