Living the legacy of Chris Hani
TWO DECADES LATER, CHRIS HANI’S LEGACY STILL LIVES ON
This year marks the 24th anniversary since the atrocious murder of the fearless freedom fighter, Chris Hani.To pay tribute to the anti-apartheid leader, the City of Ekurhuleni will continue to roll out programs, which reveals ideals, that Hani stood for.
These include the provision of decent housing, primary health care and alleviation of hunger. In ensuring that these principles that Hani stood for do not die, the City of Ekurhuleni conferred the Freedom of the City to Chris Hani in November 2006, thereby declaring April 10 the Chris Hani Month.
To kick-start the Chris Hani Month celebrations on April 10, the city will convene a wreath laying ceremony to be attended by a senior delegation of political leaders and Hani family at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg. This will be followed by a memorial lecture on Chris Hani at the Boksburg Civic Centre.
The Chris Hani Photographic Exhibition depicting the life of Chris Hani will be opened for public viewing for free, from the 10th to 30th April 2017, every day from 09:00 to 16:30 and 08:00 to 12:00 during weekends at Chris Hani’s former home in Dawn Park, Boksburg.
Some of the events to commemorate the life of Hani includes the following:
- Mayoral Diski Challenge Soccer Tournament for amature football clubs from around Ekurhuleni from the 14 to 16 April at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton.
- School debates on living the legacy of Chris Hani on the 21st and 22nd April at the Dawn Park Primary.
- Poetry slam competition on Saturday, April 29 at the Boksburg Auditorium.
