Cyber bullying and revenge porn are a major issue among minors and adults alike in South Africa. With the advent of new technology, the need for digital presence via social media is cultural, everyone wants to be online. Being online has its own risks and opens one to being bullied online.

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place online and via digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can include sharing, posting, or sending negative and false content about someone else. The internet has a dark side that poses new risks to minors and older people.

Revenge porn, also know as sextortion, is distribution and sharing of sexually explicit images or video of individuals without their consent. Perpetrators use this to blackmail victims in doing things that they are not comfortable with.

In South Africa, it has been observed that the growing cases of cyber bullying can be imputed to the attitudes of the people. Recent statistics show that one in four South African teens have been subjected to cyberbullying. This is very worrying for parents, for schools, and most importantly, for the victims themselves.

Victims of cyberbullying and revenge porn are in a vulnerable state, so how you respond to your child and the decision to report the incident to law enforcement are likely to be significant factors in either making the problem stop, or worsening the situation.

What can the victims of cyberbullying and revenge porn do to protect themselves from the bullying?
