In celebration of the centenary, Kaya FM made Mandela Day a very special day for the learners of Entandweni Primary School in Soweto. Kaya Cares, the station’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative, donated a library, books and computers to the school supported by partners – Meals on Wheels, Mbatha Walters & Simpsons Quantity Surveyors, Help2Read and Rivoningo Consulting Engineers.
Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better as Tata Nelson Mandela did throughout his entire life. He believed that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Accordingly, the library will significantly improve the literacy of the learners of Entandweni Primary School.
The half day programme for the handover included spirited singing and dance performances by the learners and teachers. Speeches were also delivered by the partners and Akunamlilo Fire Fighters gave the learners basic education for fire prevention.
There was also a special live broadcast for The B-Side with Bridget Masinga from the school grounds which gave learners and the head mistress an opportunity to be on-air.
Help2Read will run a sustainable literacy intervention programme that will give one-on-one reading support to children who struggle to read.
