When Bridget Masinga sent back information to the RSVPs for the #HlomuOntheBSide Kaya Book Club event, she included a cheeky note: Come dressed for the ‘gram. But what we saw on Saturday, 7 April, was beyond dressing nicely for the photo-sharing app, it was rising to the occasion. Afterall, the women were getting ready to meet the author of their favourite book series and get even more immersed in the world Dudu Busani-Dube has created with the “Hlomu The Wife” book series. The full conversation will be on The B-Side with Bridget Masinga on 10 April.
All in attendance at the Kaya Book Club got to share their theories about the series as well as their own experiences as Afropolitan women. Whether readers love or hate Mqhele was a big debating point. And “I found myself going about my days more open, wondering if I would find my own Zulu brother,” was something that came up frequently. We got to know Dudu Busani-Dube better and, to the surprise of everyone, Busani-Dube shared a look at the fourth “Hlomu” book. The section that was read aloud inspired gasps around the room with each person sharing what they think will happen in the fourth book. However, before the fourth book comes out, Dudu Busani-Dube will release “Zulu Wedding” a stand-alone book that isn’t part of the “Hlomu” series.
