Joburg Ballet introduces La Bayadère as first performance of Spring Season
Joburg Ballet’s rendition of the classical piece, La Bayadère, welcomed mother-daughter duos, dignitaries of Cuba and South Africa, and adorned ballet fans to opening night. Guests arrived in their most elegant attire, eager to see the new sets, costumes and choreography of this large casted performance. Showcasing an array of theatre and dance, La Bayadère presented Joburg Ballet’s acclaimed principal dancers, soloists and corps de ballet; a guest artist from the fabled National Ballet of Cuba; two veteran ballet personalities to dancers from the Joburg Ballet Academy and dancers from the Joburg Ballet Cuban School, as well as ad hoc dancers and extras.
The story is set in India and focuses on warriors and temple dancers. Capturing an intense portrayal of love and lust; jealousy and sacred activism, the characters show us their layers by introducing themselves in different environments- the palace, the gardens and the kingdom of the shades.
Commenting on the Joburg Ballet’s production of La Bayadère artistic director Iain MacDonald says: “This has been a huge undertaking but with a dedicated and passionate team we are finally here”.
“I am proud of the standard all the dancers in the principal roles will bring to the stage, offering a measure of the overall standard of the company. A classic like La Bayadère is a supreme challenge for any ballet company and our audiences can look forward to a major new addition to our repertoire beautifully danced by the whole company.”
La Bayadère runs at Joburg Theatre till 28th September. For more information, click here
