Jaguar launches the E-Pace in SA

7 March 2018 MOTORING

By Mxolisi Mhlongo

Jaguar SA recently launched its compact SUV, which they’ve nicknamed the family “cub”.   This is after the manufacturer has enjoyed the sales of the award-wining F-Pace, which boasts multiple design awards including 2017 World Car of the Year.

The Cub:  Jaguar has nicknamed this car the “cub” because a baby Jaguar is called a cub and it is a cute little thing that has everyone mellowing at its sight. This is The F-Pace’s baby and it resembles its features. After all, the name Jaguar says it all and they are following their design heritage on 21st century model.

One would think Jaguar designers just shrank the F-Pace design and put the E-Pace badge on it, but that’s not the case. Let’s make an example and characterise the car: one of the key characters of a Jaguar, the animal, is that it inspires a cuddly feeling amongst humans, the big eyes and large paws. The cars are no different. The E-Pace designers endowed it with big wheels, up to 21 inch (large paws) and large LED headlights (big eyes).

They went one step further by giving the E-Pace sexy, flowing design lines fit for a Milan catwalk. Pictures don’t do it justice as I soon realised upon seeing the E-Pace for the first time at OR Tambo International Airport.

After seeing a multitude of images in the metalic colours, the new E-Pace is stunning and buyers should play around with the wide range of stunning metallic colours on offer. The contrasting glass top and R-design stand out as design features worth considering. In summary, the E-Pace has the design that will make you attend your ex’s wedding just so you can steal the limelight.

The Interior:  The interior takes sporty design accents from the F-Type and infuses them with SUV practicality in a five-seat layout suitable for families with style. The driver-focused, wrap around dash has a passenger grab handle forming the boundary of the driver console. A 10-inch touchscreen for the Touch Pro infotainment system reduces the number of hard switches while intuitive rotary dials operate the climate control functions. The driver can have a 12.3-inch HD virtual Interactive digital speedometer combined with a full-colour Head-Up Display. It’s also important to note the car has five USB ports.

The varying interior trim options allow buyers to tailor-make their E-Pace in a trendy (or more reserved) style. The E-Pace also majors on practicality, cabin stowage and luggage space.

Engine:  The E-Pace engine line up features 2.0-litre 4-cylinder Ingenium engines in turbo petrol and turbo diesel spec with varying power levels.

Engine Power *Performance *Fuel efficiency
0-100km/h Top speed
Diesel: D150 110kW/380Nm 10.5 sec 193 km/h 5.6l/100km
Diesel: D180 132kW/430Nm 9.3 sec 205 km/h 5.6l/100km
Diesel: D240 177kW/500Nm 7.4 sec 224 km/h 6.2l/100km
Petrol: P250 184kW/365Nm 7.0 sec 230 km/h 7.7l/100km
Petrol: P300 221kW/400Nm 6.4 sec 243 km/h 8.0l/100km

All E-Pace models feature a nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. Drive is sent to all wheels in all models. The all-wheel-drive system is designed for maximum traction in all weather whilst also enhancing driving dynamics when travelling on your favourite road.

The D240 and P300 come standard with Active Driveline all-wheel drive, a system that, in normal conditions, sends power to the front wheels and in a split second, sends power to all wheels should the need arise. This saves fuel as during normal drive, the engine uses less power and fuel to power only the front wheels. The system has a multi clutch rear set-up that acts as locking differential aiding agility as it gives the E-Pace a rear wheel drive fun feel. The E-Pace has a towing capacity of up to 1800kg.

The E-Pace is available to order in Mzantsi in all dealerships with deliveries scheduled to begin in March 2018.

Style-conscious buyers will be best served to play around with trim and exterior color options.

All new Jaguar cars come with the Jaguar Five-year Care Plan: a five-year/100 000km service plan, a five-year/100 000km maintenance plan and a five-year/100 000km warranty, as standard.
