Hoarding: Are you a clutter freak, how to clean up your closet

Imagine you got a call and got your dream job offer in a different country and had to figure out what to do with all the stuff that you really don’t need. A house that is filled with broken appliances, karate trophies from 20 years ago, boxes filled with your dolls from your childhood, plates waiting for a special guest, old exam papers, a lot of sentimental old stuff gathering dust. Most people don’t know they are hoarders, it only dawns on them the day they have to move house and they the see the useless stuff they have but don’t really need.

Hoarding is also very psychological. People that are compulsive hoarders tend to excessively acquire ‘shiny’ items they never had in the past that don’t fit their reality at that present time and struggle to let them go when they have to and opt to keep those items.

It’s also common with people that go through depression and anxiety, in extreme cases dementia, ADHD and schizophrenia.

Breaking the cycle: Evaluate how you are using your space. In many cases, people have no clue what to do with large spaces in their home and worry about what people will say when they walk in, they then resort to filling it up with nonfunctional items.

Decluttering is important. There is nothing as liberating as decluttering your home, say it with me: out with the old in with the new. When something needs to be thrown away to make space for something new avoid saying this to yourself: “

That might be useful to someone else”, “I can’t live without this”, “this has a special place in my heart.” All these are the reasons why many stay with old stuff for decades, they become too attached to things, there is no flowing energy in their space.

Have a consistent decluttering ritual. The best time many declutter is during a new season, entering a new era with a lighter load. Try making time in your calendar where you commit to throwing or giving away old stuff if you haven’t used it in a year, you probably won’t use it for another year, free yourself from it.

Respect your space at all times. Your space is where you spend a lot of your time, your experience of life is created there, look after it. The greatest advice if you are a hoarder and want to turn over a new leaf is to always keep things that make sense, the rest most go.
