13-year-old Parktown Boys High School learner Enoch Mpianzi died on the first day of school this year at a school camp at Brits, in the North West.

He drowned on a Wednesday and was discovered to be missing 24 hours later. Social media has been abuzz over recent days over the nature of his death and the apparent neglect of the child.

The teachers of the school say they remember Enoch Mpianzi was a thoughtful, patient and polite child. Teachers who spoke at the memorial service of Mpianzi held at the school say they always took Mpianzi to be a relatively shy child.

They say Enoch Mpianzi showed talent in mathematics and chess. Some say Mpianzi wouldn’t be the first to put up his hand in class, but if pointed out to answer he would do so – and he would articulate himself well.

MEC Panyaza Lesufi has urged learners to grieve and cry the death of Mpianzi.

Today with John Perlman probed school safety at South African schools. His panel tabled their own thoughts and research on the issue and possible solutions. Former leaners and parents also shared their own experiences at various schools.

Listen to the full conversation here:

He told the hall full of young boys that they should speak up respectively and firmly if something wrong.  At the same time the principal of the school and some district officials have since been suspended.
