“Township economy’ refers to enterprises and markets based in the townships. These enterprises are operated by township entrepreneurs”. There are minimal understanding and exposure to the opportunities that lie in the townships of South Africa. Coverage about the township economy and its value can serve the communities in the township, government and corporate South Africa. There is a demand for government and corporate South Africa to create an enabling business environment for township entrepreneurs to thrive. The South Africans that reside in township communities make up a large percentage of the population. There are several burning issues that need to be tackled in order to co-create new ideas and ways of doing business in the township, enable a supportive environment for township entrepreneurs to thrive and be active participants in the mainstream and township economy and create industry-led economic hubs in the township.
