Fake polygamous claims in eSwatini a “poisinous” insult to monarchy

The eSwatini monarchy has issued a statement dispelling reports that the King had stated that men from eSwatini should marry two or more wives or face imprisonment. They have condemned the story stating that it is “poisonous” and “malicious”. This comes after fake reports by the Zambian Observer that saw many on Social Media responding to the claims.

Government spokesperson P.N Simelane has appeal to journalist’s morality and responsible behaiviour saying that social media is being used a character assasination platform aimed at the monarchy.

He also stated that “not only  is it an insult to the monarchy and the culture of eSwatini but a disgrace to journalism.”

“His Majesty has not made any pronuncement to thta effect as it has never been an issue raised by the eMaswatini”

The eSwatini government has urged that the newspaper retract its story with immediate effect.

Though the reports are untrue polygamy in eSwazitini remains legal, and like in South Africa is not too common mainly due to the excessive price paid for dowry (Lobola). Polygamous marriages coninue to be performed under traditional law.

The country is one of the last surviving mornachies in Africa that has a dual legal system of common law, based on Roman-Dutch law, and traditional unwritten Swazi law.
