Musa Sipho Maluleka, a new soccer boot designer in the making, has produced a boot for the rough gravel pitches in Africa. He spoke to David O’Sullivan on this innovative idea he has been working on for quite some time.
Disktjie was founded in 2019 by Musa Sipho Maluleka who had a dream of inspiring African soccer stars, with the sole purpose of taking Africa to the world.
The idea was inspired when he was in Grade 11 playing soccer in the dusty streets of Attrigeville.
This led him on a quest to find a soccer boot making factory in China that helped him with the design for the Diskjie soccer boots. During this time, he discovered that there isn’t a single African soccer boot brand that is for Africans by Africans.
“The design was inspired by the problem soccer players faced on gravel soccer pitches, usually it’s not the upper part of the boot, it’s the studs. We were like how do we solve this problem, and at first we wanted to make the studs more durable, but we found out that even the balance was a problem on gravel.” He kickstarted his project with his savings.

He says the name DISKTJIE is a combination of the word DISKI which is what soccer is called in the townships and all corners of South Africa, and the Afrikaans “verkleindewoord” suffix “tjie”.
He says the project is still in its early stages. The boot exclusively distributed at the moment. Buyers should directly message the maker himself. He is currently working on new designs and says in the coming months there will be a black version of the orange design.
“There is another design that is on the way, because you can’t solve every problem with one boot, this one is the one we have now, but I am also working on another boot that is going to come very soon.”
