With more companies adopting the open office plan structure, one of the toughest tasks for any manager is how to boost team morale and motivate for stronger team cohesion. Could the secret to teamwork actually lie in a big mug of coffee?
What the numbers say about coffee
“Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my morning cup of java.”
We’ve heard this many times around the office watering hole and may have even face-palmed a few colleagues until taking that first uplifting sip. One could chalk it up to someone not being a morning person, but it seems there’s more to it than that. Well, according to Science anyway.
Research from Ohio State University found that when people drank a caffeinated beverage before meetings or presentations, they gave a more positive performance. Coffee is also said to help people be more outspoken in group sessions, taking brainstorming to a new level.
Less yada yada, more vrrrrpha
According to researchers, coffee helps people stay more alert and prevents them from yawning in the typical office meeting. Which would probably explain why most meetings take place at coffee houses throughout the world than any boardroom.
Team performance improves when people have a cup of coffee thirty minutes before a meeting. More companies have adapted to the communal kitchen and coffee-makers, but if you want to boost staff morale you would ensure coffee is readily available and free to all staff.
Engaging over serious matters over a coffee tends to lessen the blow as well. It creates a relaxed state of mind with individuals who enjoy a strong caffeine fix.
If you’re looking for a way to boost staff morale and keep performance at an all time high, perhaps it’s time to question whether your staff prefer a freshly brewed pot or freshly ground.
