The Life Esidimeni family committee says it is doing all it can to represent all the families affected by the tragedy. This is according to Christine Nxumalo who lost her sister during the deadly transfer of mentally ill patients in Gauteng.
Since the conclusion of the arbitration proceedings – the Gauteng government has received 200 new claims for financial compensation.
These claims are from families of patients who survived the transfer to unlicensed NGOs.The arbitration process was held after 144 psychiatric patients died following their transfer.
Justice Dikgang Moseneke ruled that R1 million be paid for constitutional damages, R180,000 for emotional trauma and R20 000 funeral expenses for those who died. Nxumalo says the families are not only concerned about compensation.
