The Black Friday Sales are returning on 23 November for the 2018 edition. Already, retailers have been teasing their upcoming “big” specials! Of course, South African consumers are a little sceptical, expecting the usual 10 – 20 per cent savings. This, of course, is a valid sore point from the consumer perspective. Why would our local retailers co-opt the Black Friday sales concept and not do it correctly? In the US, where the concept originates, consumers have been known to have a saving of up to 70 per cent off.
But even if the Black Friday sales you have your eyes on end up only going up to the 25 per cent mark, what should you be looking at buying?
What to buy in the Black Friday Sales: Electronics
Electronics, as much as we love technology, can be ridiculously expensive. The upgrades and updates and new generation. Electronics are the single items that show the biggest savings. Keep an eye at your favourite electronics retailer’s specials this week.
What to buy in the Black Friday Sales: Those Sneakers
Remember we shared the importance of lay-by purchases? Well, if you are that aunt or uncle responsible for buying festive season outfits for your nephews and nieces, shopping during Black Friday will make a huge difference. If you buy designer label sneakers — either because they last longer or the children love the labels — get them during Black Friday.
What to buy in the Black Friday Sales: Travel Deals
One of the rules for travelling and not breaking the bank is to always look for deals, buy off-peak and buy in advance. Be on the lookout for travel, flight and hotel deals. If you already have your leave calendar for next year or want to make the most of our March-April-May long weekends, now is a great time to start buying flights and taking advantage of accommodation specials.
What to buy in the Black Friday Sales: Appliances
Household appliances, much like other electronics, can get quite expensive. During Black Friday, things such as that sleek kettle you’ve had your eye on; a new washing machine to relieve your old one or hair gadget of your dreams will all be massively marked down.
What to buy in the Black Friday Sales: Something that’s long-term you couldn’t normally afford
If you have something big you have been saving for, look for it in the Black Friday sales this year. However little the saving, it’s bound to have a cushioning effect on your pocket. Sometimes, 15 per cent off will be just the difference you need.
What you should think twice before buying this Black Friday: clothes, food, bedding, smaller household furnishings. These things will go on sale again, maybe even at better prices, so there’s no need to break your back buying them during Black Friday sales.
