Your Guide to Packing Like a Pro
Your tickets are booked. Your itinerary is planned. You’ve even typed up your “Out of Office” reminder. And not a minute too soon. You’re leaving on a jet plane and your dream holiday is only a few days away. But first, it’s time to pack. Something which most people ignore until the last minute, if done right packing enhances your chances of holiday bliss.
If the “travel” tab of our website wasn’t clue enough, let us say it out loud: we love encouraging Afropolitans to travel. To help you find packing perfection, we have put together our top tips for packing like a pro:
- It all starts with the basics
The saying goes: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” In the case of holidays, it’s the case that counts and a journey of a thousand miles, or even 50km, begins with proper luggage.
Worth the investment, quality luggage is one of those things that you don’t think is that important until you have to lug around a “vintage” suitcase without wheels in the blistering sun.
Tip: Check and compare luggage prices online first before purchasing.
- Think small
If you’re going for a quick break or a short escape, don’t pack your usual toiletry items. Instead, purchase the mini travel versions of your grooming essentials and save some space for those all-important holiday gifts. Alternatively, if you’re lucky enough to be going on a longer trip – skip the toiletries altogether and buy them when you arrive.
Tip: If you do pack toiletries with flip-top lids, put them in a Ziploc bag in case they open mid-flight and your clothes get soaked in shampoo.
- Write a list
Because you really don’t want to realise that you forgot to pack your charger on the other side of the world.
Tip: Save the list on your phone and remember to pack a universal adapter.
- Leave the first for last
Plan your holiday outfits and top the stacks of clothes with the items that you will wear first. Don’t forget your pyjamas, bathing suits and underwear.
Tip: If your bathing suit is still wet before your departure, wrap it in a shower cap from your hotel room.
- Prepare for the worst
While holidays are supposed to be about nothing but the best, it’s practical to consider the worst-case scenarios that could arise while travelling. If you have a gmail email address, save a copy of all of your important documents to Google Drive and relax in the knowledge that your information is protected by the worldwide web.
Tip: iPhone users can save their important information on the iCloud.
