You know you’re old if these images make total sense to you
Need an idea for dinner? There’s an app for that. Want to know who invented the flushing toilet? There’s Google for that. Running out of things to watch on TV? Showmax, Netflix, DSTV, cinema or live theatre… Pick one. We have so many options these days that we forget what life was like in the old days when things may not have been as savvy as they are now, but at least they were simpler. Here are a few things to get you feeling nostalgic about the days gone by.
- The Walkman
How cool was this little gadget? Do you remember the click sound when side A was done playing and you would have to take it out and play side B? And if you played the cassette too many times, your favourite artist starting sounding like they were singing in slow motion. Then you’d take the tape out, shake it a bit, put in back in and it was good to go! Oh, the good old days! (We never needed our music to be backed up on a cloud server just in case we lost the password to our iTunes account!)
- The Expert Tape Rewind
Remember when rewinding a tape with a pen was easier than letting the walkman do it because we were trying to saving time and battery power? (It was also seriously fun and seriously cool).
- TV ended at night
If you were up too late or too early in the morning and switched on the TV, the old SABC test screen would have met you. Remember patiently waiting for your morning cartoons to start or thinking that the people on TV also needed to sleep and that’s why TV didn’t go on all night?
- Everyone knew who these guys were
Friday nights at 18h30 was family time. Our seasonal viewing changed between Family Matters and Webster the entire year and we loved it. How many of your friends adopted Steve Erkel’s payoff lines “Did I do that?” or “Can I have some cheese please?”
- Chappies Wrappers were where we got our general knowledge
Once upon a time, chappies cost 10c. Spending the old one rand coin meant enough chappies for the whole week! The best part wasn’t the bubblegum though. It was the wrapper. Remember those chappies “facts” about your teeth growing before you were born, and one lung being smaller than the other to make room for the heart? Well, even though they might not have been accurate, we bought into them unconditionally!
While things have changed substantially, it’s good to see that some things haven’t and probably won’t. Take the Bold and the Beautiful for example. When I checked in about 6 years ago, Brooke was still stealing someone’s husband and then deciding she always loved Ridge!
