Would you break the bank to have these?
Money… A reactionary word to say the least. For most of the world, the culture around money is responsibility, learning its value and saving it. For a select few, money is a luxury, an extravagance, and opulence that sometimes make me want to say “I don’t get it. Why would you spend that kind of money on something like that?” To drive the point home, here are 5 crazy money spends that will make you shake your head.
- A hat worth $6320 (at the current rand/dollar exchange rate that’s approximately R96 155,63)
Pop legend, Michael Jackon’s infamous Billy Jean Fedora hat cost him $6320. Want to know what the even crazier part is? There are hats that cost almost twenty times that. Princess Beatrice’s Royal Wedding hat cost an astounding $133 738. Does anyone see the logic there?
- Pizza/Pie at $12 000 (R182 543,38 approx.)
I would assume that food this expensive would either cook itself, send you straight to heaven or make music come out of your ears. Sadly it doesn’t. The dough takes 72 hours to prepare and it contains some expensive ingredients like lobster, caviar and hand picked pink Australian sea salt. If you ever want to experience it, go to Salerno, Italy.
- Cat poop coffee at $35-$100 (R532,42-R1521,19 approx.) a cup
You read that right. It’s coffee made from cat poop. Its retail name is Kopi Luwak coffee and what makes this so expensive is the way the coffee is produced. An Indonesian cat species eats the coffee beans, which are then passed through its digestive system. The excrement is then finished and SOLD! At up to $100 a cup, this must be some seriously good coffee.
- Socks at £495 (R10 710,21 approx.)
Everybody loves socks. For the most part they’re a necessity but socks have become trendy in their variety of colours, patterns and textures. That said, are a pair of limited edition premium knitted socks made from vicuna (species of animal in Peru) wool by brand Falke, worth almost R11 000? Let’s hope they never get holes in them.
- Toilet Paper at $1.3million (R19 767 540,00 approx.)
And we complain when it’s not on special at Pick n Pay or Checkers. This 3ply toilet paper is made of 22 carat gold flakes. After purchase, buyers allegedly receive a bottle of champagne. The inventor of this found inspiration after experiencing fully golden toilets in Dubai.
