When Hope Whispers
It was not only interesting to read Zoleka Mandela’s journey, from her tender years through her teens, her battles transition and choices that she had to make in her adult life coupled with surviving breast cancer. When I saw that the forward was written by her grandmother Winnie Madikizela I wondered how that would be, but let me tell you that I was taken aback. The honesty and the love of a grandmother that came through in the forward was quite humbling.
Reading the book I couldn’t help see myself in some of what she went through. How we make the wrong choices, in our relationships and how that can send us in the wrong direction. Even in her rebellion Zoleka Mandela loved her children dearly.
Losing her Zenani in an accident in 2010 and her prematurely born son Zenawe seems to have been the thing that gave her strength to change her life and live for not herself but also her son Zwelami. The support from Winnie Madikizela- Mandela and her aunt Zenani Mandela Dlamini as well as her friends and partner is exactly what anyone who went through her trials and tribulations especially in her fight against breast cancer needed to keep going.
The book is definitely a compelling, reflective and emotional read that lets you in on Zoleka’s life and love for her children and family. It makes the Mandela family ordinary and shows you that they too have challenges and demons to fight.
