What you missed at the Kaya FM Father and Son One Paal Challenge
The inaugural Kaya FM Father and Son Challenge took place at the Zoo Lake in Johannesburg on Saturday the 18th of June. Afropolitan fathers and their sons descended on the Friends in Sport Arena for a 5/6-side-football tournament between fathers and their sons to celebrate Fathers’ Day. After a warm welcome by Kaya FM MD, Greg Maloka, the boys and one girl, between the ages of ten and thirteen divided themselves into three teams: All Stars, Barcelona and Kaizer Chiefs with Barcelona winning the kids tournament. Two fathers teams; the Favourable Fathers and the Dangerous Dads did battle with the Favourable Fathers coming out on top.
This meant that we had a final showdown between the Favourable Fathers (coached by former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Matthew Booth) and Barcelona (coached by former Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and Bafana midfielder Renee Richards). The kids put in a brave performance, pushing their fathers all the way. The Fathers would win it narrowly, but family was the winner on the day as all in attendance including Maloka, Booth and Richards agreed that South Africa needs more of these kinds of initiatives that allow fathers to bond with their children in an outdoor sporting event.
Thank you to everyone that attended and we hope that this is the beginning of many more Kaya FM Father and Son One-Paal Challenges.
