A wintry Johannesburg culture and lifestyle guide
The temperatures are dropping and soon your instinct will probably be to retreat into your home and never come out until the weather is decent again. But we say fight that urge to hibernate! There are a few cultural events worth leaving the house for, consider this your wintry culture and lifestyle guide to autumn and winter 2018.
25 – 27 May
Happening over the Africa Day weekend, Bassline Fest will be a three-day extravaganza bringing best elements of the original Bassline Africa Day Concert while creating space for much-needed dialogue. The festival’s “Be the legacy” collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation means a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s centenary and makes the festival a great venue to find solutions for problems facing Africa.
Winter Sculpture Fair
12 and 13 May
Krugersdorp, a venue for art, culture and lifestyle fun? Colour us all surprised! Hosted at the NIROX Foundation sculpture park, the Winter Sculpture Fair, in its sixth year, is the perfect day trip for the whole family.
There will be sculptures curated specifically for the fair by Swedish curators Elisabeth Millqvist & Mattias dotting the sculpture park grounds. The food and wine on offer will be the best from the Franschhoek Valley making the fair an opportunity to taste the best of Franschhoek while staying in the province!
Kaya FM Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is early enough into the autumn that it’s quite possible that we will have sunshine, which is what we always hope for. But even failing that, bundle up and come join us for family games, music and a whole day dedicated to mum. We always have special artists line up for the day and there is a better way — than a picnic she doesn’t have to prepare — to celebrate another year with the most important women in your life.
Wine & Malt Whisky Affair
23 and 24 May
The Kaya FM Wine & Malt Whisky Affair is coming back to Hyde Park Corner once more for a year’s worth of wine and whisky connoisseur fun, put into two days. With over 80 wines from the best wineries in the country and single malt blended whiskies.
The Wine & Malt Whisky Affair is also a great place to engage with others who love the same spirits as you and those who make them. A highlight of the event is always the opportunity to sample and buy limited edition wines and whiskies. Perfect for a night out with your partner, friends or business associates.
Turbine Art Fair
12 – 15 July
While Newtown has experienced a steady decline in cultural activities in the past 10 to 15 years, events such as the Turbine Art Fair come around yearly to remind us what Newtown can be again. The 2018 edition of the art fair will offer over 50 exhibitions as well lifestyle elements such as food and drink, live music, a children’s programme and more.
Between 12 and 15 July, the Turbine Art Fair will bring back the bustle into one of Johannesburg’s original art and culture neighbourhoods. The recently opened Market Square, bringing The Market Photo Workshop and Market Theatre Laboratory closer to the theatre, is slowly increasing activity in the neighbourhood.
