Weekend paper wrap with Bob Mabena
By Bob Mabena
Well, Nkandla made it to the front pages and thats no surprise at all. But as we started this weekend there was news of victory for Mr Magoo – Robert McBride. Let’s quickly try trace this story and see where it originates as portrayed by the City Press. McBride was suspended after he was accused of altering and IPID report that implicated Gauteng Hawks boss Shadrack Sibiya and former Hawks boss Anwa Dramat. He in turn approached the court seeking to halt the disciplinary hearing pending his high court application. In this application, this former MK operative challenges the constitutionality of powers entrusted to Police Minister Nhleko to suspend the IPID head. This application is due to be heard to be heard in August. Mcbride has successfully gotten the law on his side by getting his disciplinary hearing to be halted at least up until the outcome of his court challenge to the Minister. Other characters involved include The Helen Suzman Foundation, Mxolisi Zondo, Zim Nationals and law enforcers. This begs question – who is protecting us when all senior officers are camping in our courts? Criminals must be rubbing their hands with glee and it is painfully obvious that there is no leadership in SA police services; for goodness sake, our minister is busy in a show-and-tell circus on pools…or is it fire pools?
Back to the Firepool saga; i must admit that I didn’t see this one coming. The question on most South African lips is why is it that those the public see as intelligent and wholesome in the ANC are not coming out to agree with the public protector on Nkandla – the likes of Naledi Pandor, Mathole Motshekga, Lindiwe Sisulu. Well, i am sure that now that the City Press has published a story that shows his breaking of ranks; Maharaj’s name will be changed to “Mac The knife” by the likes of Blade Nzimande. Mac The Knife reveals that he warned President Zuma about the Nkandla whiplash and Number One didn’t take heed. Again, as I always say every Monday morning; this is going to be an interesting week. It all started with Julius apologising for backing Zuma, Zwelinzima followed, Sdumo Dlamini gave a half hearted confession to the faux pas in backing Zuma, and now Mac has just spoken – who else is going to come out of the woodwork, I wonder. Still, Msholozi stands. I guess it will take Blade Nzimande to get everyone else to speak truth to power – dont hold your breath though – It’s not going to happen.
And finally some news to be proud of; a young man by the name of Musa Morgan has come up with a new underwear that any man can slip on without the pain and discomfort that comes after voluntary circumcision. He calls it “Uyindoda MMC underpants”. I would have gone with “snip & smile”, but then again, there is a song with the lyrics “yoopy yo!”, so I may not qualify. And yes Obama had fun in Kenya this weekend, our cycling team is doing quite well at the tour de France and the clock is ticking for our very own Trevor Noah to hit the small screen in a big way – bring on the new week I say!
