Weekend news wrap up with Bob Mabena – 6 March 2016
An article by Jan-Jan Joubert in the Sunday times stole my attention and it was quite a good read indeed. In it he quantum leaps from a UK lame duck leader scenario to a quote by Bill Clinton that I quite like “compared to what”. This is to try address the issue of Zuma’s leadership conundrum. Two prominent ANC personalities have moved either sideways or completely out of the way – Stone Sizane and Keith Khoza. Keith has joined a department headed by a man perceptually sidelined by Zuma – Paul Mashatile and Stoan will be posted outside of the country; perhaps in Germany. Rewind a bit to the “halfhearted” defense the ANC afforded its president and you will realize that the Number One’s house of cards is not steady at all. Joubert reminds us that out of many in the ANC caucus, only Pule Mabe, Motshekga and Lindi Zulu “tried’ to defend the President but even so, it seemed more protection or defense of the ANC than Zuma. Jan-Jan closes his article with an amber assertion that perhaps the caucus wouldn’t want to recall the president but would rather have a “belled cat” situation, where Zuma is reigned ion and closely watched. I guess it’s a wait and see game until that widely anticipated national conference next year. Unless, there is a back room deal that takes us by surprise and some sort of announcement is made round midnight on a Sunday.
In the City Press, there’s a report that the SACP is suggesting a judicial commission to probe issues relating to the Guptas. The newspaper has an illustrative diagra, of Gupta benefactors and apparent supporters and that obviously includes his son Duduzane, Brian Molefe, Mosebenzi Zwane and the two minute finance minister amongst others. In this never ending and obtuse Gupta saga; there are meetings upon meetings and meetings about meetings. On etching what one has to read from this is that the SACP has always been a strong supporter of President Zuma – they now sit on the other side of the fence and are pushing for this enquiry. The Guptas on the other hand are saying that they welcome any enquiry as their latest audited financials reveal that only one percent of their earnings come form SA government businesses. I say how about we look at turnover as well – that good IBT and EBITDA. Let’s do it!!!
And then there is former Chair of the ANCWL, Winnie Madikizela-Mandsela. She is involved in a case that could affect a lot of people and not just Nelson Mandelas’s estate. The question posed here is “which lasts longer; a civil marriage or a customary Union”. In contention is Madiba’s Qunu home grounds, where he is buried. This estate was bequeathed to The Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Trust for use by his family and that includes his wife Graca Machel And her children. She has also submitted to the court that she was given the property while Madiba’s was in prison (please remember that they were married at the time). Anyway, Winnie of course favors another battle and one hopes and prays that this is her last one. All this woman has known is strife, suffering, isolation, mocking, banning, rejection, physical, mental and emotional pain. May God truly grant Winnie Madikizela-Mandela some peace real soon.
And finally, Msholozi is going to Nigeria on a mission to try mend relations with that country. Amongst his deflation is Minister of Instagram; Malusi Gigaba. Be sure to log onto social media to get some updates from Minister Gigabyte. Perhaps he will take his wife with and Buhle will be banned from Nigeria just for that too. And oh; Mosebenzi Zwanme is going too…..know what I mean.
