Violence erupts at Wits
Chaos has erupted at Wits University’s main Campus in Johannesburg. Police had to be called in after protesting students stormed the Great Hall damaging property. Students clashed with security guards earlier. They had regrouped at the main campus after marching to the medical school as well as the school of education in Parktown earlier today. They were to march to the Hillbrow police station where other students arrested this morning are believed to be held. Police then foiled that plan.
Students started protesting this morning after Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande announced the 2017 fee structure yesterday. The minister announced that universities can only increase fees for next year by up to eight percent at the discretion of the institution.
Students don’t want the increment to the left up to the varsity management.
Today’s scenes are reminiscent of protest action by students against fee hikes last year. Earlier in the day, there were reports that students at the Tshwane University of Technology Acardia campus had also gathered to protest and the campus had been closed.
Wits students are now gathered at the Solomon Mahlangu house. It is also expected that those arrested this morning will be released later today.
