Two more bodies recovered at Langlaagte mine
There are no more miners trapped underground a disused shaft in Langlaagte west of Johannesburg. Yesterday two more bodies were recovered from the mine by the relentless community there.
These efforts come after authorities suspended rescue operations yesterday. Shadrack Mlalazi, brother of one of the men who’s body was recovered yesterday says, he and the community took the matter into their own hands after their relatives were unaccounted for.
The community recovered the bodies of two Zimbabwean nationals in the search. While a total of three deaths have been recorded in Langlaagte so far seven other illegal miners have been arrested at the mine.
Mineral resources minister Mosebenzi Zwane visited Langlaagte earlier in the week and said while his department does issue permits for disused shafts to be mined, some people do not follow regulations.
The Chamber of Mines says:
- 70% of all arrested illegal miners are illegal immigrants
- 14,000 people are estimated to be involved in illegal mining.
- There is a R6 million annual value in illegal mining.
- Research has also shown that not all artisanal mining had detrimental effects on the economy and communities.
