The loud silence that comes with rape
By definition rape is the unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim.
So simply put, rape refers to sexual intercourse that is without consent. And for me if it is without consent it means you do not have permission to do whatever you plan to do. If it goes ahead it is a violation of someone’s being.
The other thing associated with rape is power. The power to inflict pain on someone, to take from that person against their will.
The reason I’m going into this is that I just heard of a rape case that allegedly took place at one of the residences of Wits University. According to activists on campus, an international student was raped by another student. She reported the incident to management and the varsity’s gender office and after no action was taken, the student tried to take her life. From what I understand the student withdrew the charges when she did not get help.
The alleged perpetrator was all the time living at the residence. I can only imagine what it is like to see your aggressor every day just living life while you are agonising over what happened to you.
The institution is yet to comment on the case, treating it as if it never happened. In fact had it not been for action taken by other students to confront management and someone shooting a video, the young woman who has now dropped out of Wits’s story would have gone unheard as many others do.
This is a snippet that was taken after students hunted down the man involved and confronted management last night.
