Teams to watch at AFCON 2015 – Ivory Coast
The Ivory Coast has only won the Africa Cup of Nations once in their history. And although that victory came way back in 1992, The Elephants are always counted as favourites whenever AFCON comes around because they have so much quality in their team. This time Cote d’Ivoire go into the tournament on the back of some questionable form.
At the 2014 World Cup the likes of Yaya Toure, Gervhino, Kolo Toure, Wilfried Bony and Salomon Kalou flattered to deceive as the-then top ranked African side were eliminated from the group stages after a dramatic 2-1 loss to the Greeks in their final round robin match.
Their AFCON 2015 qualification campaign wasn’t much better, and although they eventually booked their spot at Equatorial Guinea, they only did so as runners-up to Cameroon in Group D. Thrashed 4-1 by the Indomitable Lions and beaten 4-3 by the Democratic Republic of Congo, The Elephants will be concerned with their leaky defence. The West Africans conceded 11 goals – the most of all the teams that qualified for Equatorial Guinea.
But form notwithstanding, The Ivory Coast can be formidable on their day. Even in the absence of veteran striker and former captain Didier Drogba, who will not be playing in Equatorial Guinea, their wealth of European stars makes them one of the teams to beat at the tournament. Add to that the fact that they are coached by Frenchman Herve Renard, who won the tournament with Zambia in the same country two years ago, and a picture begins to emerge of a team that are capable of winning the title.
The only question is: “Can they keep all their egos in check and work together to win the tournament and shed the “AFCON CHOKERS” tag once and for all?” Your guess is as good as mine.
