Quick fire questions with Skhumba
On Monday we got to know “180 with Bob” resident comedian and commentator, Skhumba. Today we have quick fire facts about his personality. Thank you to Kaya fans on Facebook for providing some of the questions.
- Do you “LOL” or “ha ha”?
Neither. I’m not a “LOL” or a “ha ha’ person. I’m a “Kwaaaaa” person.
- Pisto Mosimane or Shakes Mashaba?
Neither. Gordon Igesund. Manqoba Mnqethi. Steve Kompela.
- Who is the last person you Whatsapp’ed?
I have my team, my managers, my friends, my wife and my mother on Whatsapp. I use it to run my business interests but to also stay in touch with my loved ones.
- Favourite comedy spot?
Any stage with good sound, a microphone and people — the number doesn’t matter to me. Give me a stage and a microphone and I’m good to go.
- Favourite guilty pleasure food? The kind you’ll eat in a hurry even from the pot.
This is my grandmother’s speciality: she makes a great meal of uphuthu, beef meat bones and cabbage. Nobody can make that like my grandmother does it and regardless of how much of a hurry I’m in, I’ll make time to take a few spoonfuls.
- Best holiday destination?
Anywhere there’s no music, there are no people shouting and it’s just quiet. The best holiday is one where my wife is not shouting and my kids are not around.
- Your favourite animal in the big five?
The elephant. It has great memory, which is something very useful in my line of work. People think I just get on stage and talk, but it’s all laid out in my head. When I’m telling one joke, already in the back of my mind I’ve opened a file for the next joke. My mind works like an elephant’s and I’m strong like one too.
- Converse or Loxion Kulca?
Loxion Kulca. My friend Wandi co-founded it. I don’t know Chuck Taylor but I know Wandi — if you have a dream you have a dream. Go after it.
- Instagram or Facebook?
Instagram. It’s easy for me to promote my gigs whereas there’s always too much drama on Facebook. People on Facebook will act ignorant when they’re not. It’s as if we all regress to where we were when we joined the platform. Instagram on the other hand shows progress. People are out in the world and they share the beauty they see with each other. I use my platforms to promote my work and my personal life has nothing to do with it.
- Velaphi or Emzini Wezinsizwa?
Velaphi. But actually, S’gudi Snaysi. Velaphi was nice but uSdumo was way ahead of his time.
It’s safe to assume Skhumba’s first one-man show has sold out, when we met up with him he had just opened an extra slot of which he only had 300 tickets remaining. But don’t fear the man has his eyes on a national tour with more Gauteng dates and venues.
“I’m going to take this show on the road. Skhumba Hlophe Live Gold Reef City 6th and 7th November; Skhumba Hlophe Live Durban Playhouse 20th 21st November; Skhumba Hlophe Live in East London 15th December. I want to run this show for the next six months and do all nine provinces.
Catch Skhumba on “180 With Bob” every Friday morning.
