SuperSport Let’s Play, Kaya FM, UNICEF, along with other radio stations to raise 1 MILLION Soccer Balls.

It is well documented that children who participate in regular sports activity produce better academic results, are healthier, get less involved with negative influences such as crime and drugs, and benefit from raised self-esteem and confidence.

Lets Play is about enabling children to live healthier lives - through a shared vision and a network of partners and facilitators, to let the kids get back into the fresh air and out of breath! For the first time, Let’s Play, SuperSport and various regional radio stations, backed by UNICEF, are joined together in a project called “Let’s Play a Million”.

Kaya FM is the Johannesburg station to partner the initiative in Gauteng, South Africa.

Station MD Charlene Deacon said the event is of such magnitude that kids across the country will benefit.

“Some 43% of the population is under the age of 20, with 13% under the age of six,” said Deacon. “’Let’s Play a million’ is an initiative to compliment the overall Let’s Play campaign and aims to raise a million soccer balls by 2010, to enable our kids to play the beautiful game and to get the country excited about the 2010 World Cup. Kaya FM is proud and excited to be part of this project.”

Let’s Play a Million involves a call to the public as well as our private sector to support and donate soccer balls or the rand equivalent via a national telethon, implemented in each region by partnering radio stations in various regions and supported by an awareness drive on the SuperSport channels. The telethon will take place in a Mall environment to make donating more accessible and create a visual presence with the public who will be able to see and interact with their national sporting heroes and favourite radio station presenters.

The telethon will take place across the country on 27 June 2007.

The partners are:

-Kaya FM – Gauteng
-East Coast Radio – Kwazulu Natal
-Heart FM– Western Cape
-OFM Radio – Free State
-Algoa FM – Eastern Cape
-UNICEF
-Department of Education

SuperSport will be actively involved with the project by regularly reporting on the progress and providing coverage of the telethon. Several events around the project will be announced.

Deacon continues: “I know our mKaya will lend their support to this very worthwhile initiative and we are especially pleased to be the Gauteng radio partner alongside SuperSport. Come on Gauteng – Let’s Play a Million.”
