Prepaid Meters Reduce Illegal Connections
Prepaid meters that were installed in Soweto townships last year have reduced illegal electricity connections.
Power utility Eskom is now reporting that what they call the green box – new sub-stations with an upgraded security system has also helped because it cannot be easily accessed or tampered with.
To date, more than 41 thousand prepaid meters have been installed in Soweto.
Yesterday the electricity producer reported that it has managed to collect R39 million of revenue in Soweto during the financial year which ended in June this year.
Eskom’s Khulu Phasiwe says they have a target of installing an additional 140 thousand prepaid meters throughout Soweto in the coming 5 years.
