Police monitor Rosettenville after weekend protests
Police specialised units are in Rossetenville, South of Johannesburg to monitor the area after fresh violence erupted there this weekend.
Residents took matters into their own hands after getting no help from authorities in dealing with drugs and brothels in the area. Residents there have over the past few years marched over the increase in drug dens and brothels in Rossetenville.
Mayor Herman Mashaba set up a task team to deal with the issue after the first set of properties were torched last week.
Police say the nine people arrested in the protests will appear in court in the next 48 hours, while 15 properties have been damaged in the protests since last week. They have also called anyone with information to contact police.
Rossetenville is not the only area that is battling drugs, In Eldorado Park, President Jacob Zuma and police had to intervene after reports of an increase in lolly lounges and an increase in violence and crime in the area.
