#OccupyLuthuliHouse Campaign goes ahead amid threats of violence
A handful of the people have gathered outside the ANC’s headquarters – Luthuli House in Johannesburg under heavy police presence as part of the #OccupyLuthuliHouse campaign.
The campaign is organised by members of the Sefako Makgatho branch in Johannesburg who have publically called for President Jacob Zuma and the ANC’s top brass as well as its entire National Executive Committee to go.
Yesterday the organisers of the campaign were forced to ask their supporters not to join them as part of the demonstration after members of the ANC youth league and others vowed to defend Luthuli house and its leaders, threatening violence.
Supporters of the #OccupyLuthuliHouse have now gathered at Beyers Naude Square near Luthuli House ahead of the handover of the memorandum to ANC’s leaders.
Calls for the party’s leaders to step down come after its poor showing at the recent local government elections in August. The ANC lost key municipalities to the Democratic Alliance. These include the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the Eastern Cape as well as the Tshwane and Johannesburg Metros in Gauteng amongst others.
At the same time, the ANC women’s league has vowed to protect the party’s structures against those that plan to march to its headquarters The league says the #OccupyLuthuliHouse movement is driven by cowards who are pulling a cheap political stunt.
