Occupy Luthuli House Implications
Political analyst Prince Mashele has described the ANC as a deeply divided organization. Mashele was responding to developments following yesterday’s campaign to occupy the party’s headquarters – Luthuli House in the Johannesburg CBD.
A group of ANC members planned to deliver a memorandum demanding President Jacob Zuma and the entire National Executive Committee resign. Crowd controlling police units had to prevent clashes between two groups of ANC supporters there.
Party members on opposite sides of the campaign exchanged harsh words at Beyers Naude Square.
At the same time, the ANC says branches should make decisions about taking action against members who took part in the #OccupyLuthuliHouse campaign.
The group wants President Jacob Zuma and his entire National Executive Committee to step down.
They are also calling on party veterans to organise a consultative conference to give way to a new leadership.
Calls for the top ANC brass to go are largely due to the party’s poor showing at the August local government poll.
Meanwhile, #OccupyLuthuliHouse’s Gugu Ndima says they are prepared for any disciplinary action against them as ANC members.
