Not to be missed performances between Soccer World Cup Semi-finals and Finals

As legendary as he is, so too are the legendary performances by international jazz icon and all-time favourite South African musician, composer and bandleader Hugh Masekela, fondly known locally as ‘Bra Hugh”. Hailed around the world for his talented performances and collaborations with the likes of Paul Simon, Simply Red, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder, trumpeter and flugelhorn master, Hugh Masekela returns to The Teatro at Montecasino for two concerts only, presented in association with KayaFM, on Thursday, 8 July and Friday, 9 July 2010 commencing at 20h00.

The enormous demand for tickets for ‘Bra Hugh’s’ sell-out 70th birthday year concerts at The Teatro in June last year and the many fans that want to sing and dance to the sounds of this incredibly talented musician has made return performances an obvious choice.

“Due to overwhelming demand we have decided to restage another Hugh Masekela experience at The Teatro, says show promoter, Tony Feldman of Showtime Management. “The response and reaction to Bra Hugh’s 70th Birthday celebration events was so overwhelming we felt it was a perfect time to restage the event during the World Cup Football and to a possible International audience who have never had the privilege of watching the legendary Jazz icon on stage and in an intimate setting.” These shows will not compete with the football as they will be during the “off” days between the semi’s and the finals. “The shows will once again consist of the icon together with his unbelievable 6 piece band, soulful 7 voice choir and talented friends who will join him in this celebration of South African music.” adds Feldman

This treasured South African icon still moves a crowd to laugh, sing and dance. From curtain up to the repeated encores, the electrifying atmosphere in the auditorium is a not to be missed experience. “Following the success of last year’s concerts, Kaya FM is both proud and privileged to again be associated with the iconic Hugh Masekela. One of the foremost storytellers of the South African music story, Bra Hugh’s masterful talents will be a special treat for local and international audiences enjoying the football fever in the country.” says Kaya FM’s Mark Mdlela.

Hugh Masekela has graced the South African music scene for more than five decades. Internationally, he has played on stages of the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall and at the finest Jazz festivals including the Montreaux Jazz Festival and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

In a life now in it’s seventh decade Hugh Masekela has played the trumpet and the flugelhorn and joined musical forces with the likes of Kippie Moeketsi, Stewart Levine, The Byrds, Minnie Riperton, Eric Gale, Paul Simon, Fela Kuti, The Crusaders, Simply Red, Lamont Dozier, Bob Marley, Caiphus Semenya, Herb Alpert, Miriam Makeba, Jonathan Butler, Jonas Gwangwa, Stevie Wonder, Letta Mbulu, Busi Mhlongo to name but a few.

His musical vocabulary has encompassed salsa, samba, mbaqanga, jazz, rock and soul, rhythm and blues, reggae, hi-life, kwassa-kwassa and any combination of these he sees fit to engage. He’s worked on projects that span from The Rumble In The Jungle to Sarfina! In this time he’s also been a father, an activist, a lover, a joker, an outlaw, and above all an artist who has overcome adversity and personal challenges.

Bra Hugh will perform all-time favourites like “Stimela”, “Thanayi”, “Happy Mama”, “Lady”, and “Grazing In The Grass” with his band featuring Erick Paliani on guitar, Lee-Roy Sauls on drums, Fana Zulu on bass and Randal Skippers on keyboards.
