My baby hates the ocean!
By Sotho Meyer
So I was in Margate this past weekend to cover the Spar Netball National Championships. Because I’d just come back from Australia where the Spar Proteas finished fifth at the Netball World Cup, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and catch up on some family time while following the netball. And it was on the beaches of Margate that I got the biggest shock of my life when I discovered that my 9 month year old baby hates the sea. I had incorrectly assumed that since she’s been going to early learning development classes since 6 weeks old and has a whole nursery room to herself plus has had a travel pillow from day one that she would just take to the sea like a fish. Instead she hated the experience. She cried when I put her in the water and let’s not even talk about sitting on the sand because that only added insult to injury. My husband and I were shocked by the revelation.
Anyway we now know that we might not have a beach bum on our hands or maybe she will surprise us and one day become the poster child for Bondi blue. Either way we didn’t let that get in the way of over indulging at the Waffle House, certainly my favourite spot on the South Coast (and I’ve only been there 3 times). This place is awesome. The modest English decor with all the wood and overstuffed pillows (much like the Pomms in person) belie the supersize flavour that comes out of those waffles. As long as you don’t do what my gastronomically adventurous husband did and that’s order a savoury waffle, chicken a la King Nogal – who does that?! Waffles were always meant to be too sweet with a side of ice cream!
I’ll definitely be back for again to enjoy the waffles when I return to cover next year’s edition of the Spar Netball National Championships. Hopefully next time my almost 2-year-old Rali will finally enjoy the beach as much as she did the netball at the Ugu sports centre this year.
