Mvelaphanda learner drowns in flooding
Kaya FM is extremely saddened by the death of one of Mvelaphanda primary school learners yesterday afternoon.
Several years ago, Kaya FM adopted Mvelaphanda Primary School as our very own. This is a school in an underprivileged area and we are working with them to uplift the school and assist the learners and educators to reach better opportunities.
Three learners were walking home from school in heavy downpours that left some areas flooded over the past couple of days. One of the girls, Ndivho Malatsi – a – 13-year-old, slipped and fell into a v-drain where she was overwhelmed by the water.
A resident who witnessed the incident and recognised the learners with their school uniform called Mvelaphanda principal Thomas Mathavha. Mathavha waited for the teen’s parents who came to the school to look for their child when she did not arrive home.
After searching until late last night, the police abandoned their search. This morning, the search resumed and rescuers were led to a pipe going to a small river.
The girl was found at Winnie Mandela Park in Tembisa which is estimated to be about 800 meters from where she fell.
Malatsi will be laid to rest in Venda on Saturday.
KayaFM extends its deepest condolences to the Malatsi family and the Mvelaphanda school community.
