Murder rate up, sex crimes down
The country’s murder rate has gone up by 4.88%.
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko released the 2015/2016 crime statistics today.
According to the stats, 18,673 murders were recorded nationally, up from 17,805 in 2014. Attempted murder has also increased by more than 3%,
Sex crimes, including rape, have however decreased by 3.2%.
“South Africa is experiencing a decrease in incidences of crime in the broad categories, with the exception of one particular category that appears to be stubborn and that’s the contact crime category.
“But, if you go into the finer and deeper analysis of what the contact crime analysis outlook is and so on, it actually talks to the social fabric of our society,” said Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko.
