Minerals minister visits zama-zama mine
The ugly head of illegal mining continues to rear its ugly head in Johannesburg.
Over the weekend, four miners were rescued from a shaft in Langlaagte , west of the city. w
The group is expected to appear in court over the next two days on charges illegal mining. .
Meanwhile , Mineral resources minister Mosebenzi Zwane is to visit the shaft where seven illegal miners are still trapped.
Rescue teams consisting of the South African Police Service, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, paramedics and the City of Johannesburg also resume operations there this morning.
Langlaagte Councilor – Basil Douglas has called on government to prioritise and address the issue of illegal mining which is on the rise in the country.
Kaya News has now learnt that despite police assurance that nobody will be allowed to take search and rescue into their own hands at the shaft , a group of friends of the trapped miners has now entered the mine.
Around five other miners surfaced earlier and it is now unclear just how many zama -zamas are trapped underground.
