MAYOR TAKES AIM AT STATE OF THE CITY
Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele is set to give his final State of the City address next week.
Scheduled to take place at the Tsakane Stadium on Wednesday April 20, the speech will be the mayor’s last for this term of office which dates to 2011.
“This is the mayor’s final address before the elections in August. When this administration took office in 2011, the people gave us a mandate to among others improve their socio-economic conditions. It is therefore proper that we account on this mandate and inform the voters on what we were able to do, where we are, where we are going and what challenges we have experienced in the past five years,” mayoral spokesman Zweli Dlamini said.
“Each year we have reported back through annual progress reports. This is the grand finale and people can expect a detailed five-year report because transparency is one of the main characteristics of this government.”
The mayor will anchor his speech on the five imperatives of the city’s Growth and Development Strategy 2055 which outlines what the metro must do to become a delivering city by 2020, capable city by 2030 and sustainable city by 2055.
The imperatives of the GDS are:
- Re-Urbanise – achieve sustainable urban integration;
- Re-Industrialise – to achieve job-creating economic growth;
- Re-Govern – to achieve effective co-operative governance;
- Re-Generate – to achieve environmental well-being; and
- Re-Mobilise – to achieve social empowerment.
“The view of the mayor is that five years on, we can no longer be articulating dreams of 2011 but rather deliver a tangible service delivery report that gives hope to everyone in the society regardless of their standard of living, race or creed. This is what the people can expect,” Dlamini continues
