Matlou reckons Kgatlana will win CAF award
Noko Matlou has congratulated her Banyana Banyana teammate Thembi Kgatlana for being nominated for the CAF Awards in the CAF Women’s Player of the Year. As the only South African to win the award back in 2009, the veteran Banyana striker-cum-defender believes that Kgatlana deserves the nomination and has a good chance of winning the award.
Meanwhile Matlou shared her disappointment about missing out on this year’s Sasol League National Championships. The tournament which pits the nine provincial champions against one another takes place at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspruit from 4 to 9 December and features defending champions Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, Sunflower, De Scorpions, RC Mills, Thunderbirds, Cape Town Roses, Kanatla Ladies and host team, Coal City Wizards.
But Matlou’s Ma-Indies will not be present because of yet another one of many refereeing controversies that have bedevilled women’s football in the country. Ma-Indies lodged a complaint about the standard of refereeing in their match against rivals Kanatla. After a disciplinary enquiry, it was Kanatla who would represent Limpopo. Matlou reckons having more women referees in the league there would be fairer refereeing.
In the absence of Matlou’s Ma-Indies, 2015 champions Sundowns are the favourites to lift the trophy. Goalkeeper, Andile Dlamini believes 2017 will be their year.
