Let’s Leave it in 2016
Culture can get rather tedious. Things happen and we spend the whole year talking in circles around them. And 2016 has been a long year. Please let’s leave the following behind!
Being lenient on racists
This year South Africa had a slew of racists coming out of the woodwork to make their beliefs public. However, nothing concrete has happened to correct their bigotry. The masses on social media sometimes help to get these people fired or the court orders them to pay a fine. But neither scenario leads to any of these people unlearning their prejudices.
Telling people to get over apartheid
Close on the heels of racists brazenly outing themselves on Facebook, there’s the ‘reaction police’, telling those offended and hurt by racist statements to get over history. It’s been 22 years! Why has all this time not made racists realise that the previously marginalised (black, Indian, coloured people) are equal citizens of this country? Wanting to address racism is not being stuck in the past; leave that idea in 2016.
Talking about blessers
It has been an unhelpful conversation that has done nothing but shame women for trying to survive capitalism. If you want to talk about blessers to address how they take advantage of vulnerable women and girls, if you’d like to talk about how we don’t protect poor women and girls and expect them to magically survive this system – please shout it from the rooftops in 2017. If not, erase the word ‘blesser’ from your vocabulary.
By which we mean that we should leave our cultural need to comment on what’s happening on women’s faces (and their bodies) in 2016. If you don’t want your eyebrows to be that on-fleek, fine. But don’t tell others what to do with theirs.
Let’s leave people’s bodies alone in 2017 and beyond.
Prophets of Doom
It’s been a difficult couple of years where religion and the poor are concerned. It seems that since around 2012, there has been an outrageous pastor every quarter to take over where the last left off. Each one promises to help poor black people find favour, blessings and wealth, while the country watches their humiliation, all because they believe there might be more to life for them than their current situation.
Can we be free in 2017? Please.
What do you want to leave behind in 2016?
