Lebo M Donates R50 000 to Tennis SA Development Programme
Legendary composer and Lebo M has donated R50 000 to Tennis South Africa’s development programme, which is based at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Jabavu, Soweto. The voice and inspiration behind the world-famous Lion King heard of the plight of the talented young tennis players during a Kaya Sports bulletin on Kaya FM’s breakfast show 180 with Bob.
Lebo and his fiancé Zoe Mthiyane were so moved by the youngsters’ struggles to buy tennis shoes and racquets that they decided to donate R10 000 (through the Lebo M Foundation) which will assist four kids with shoes, racquets, transport costs and tournament entry fees. Lebo, Zoe, members of his foundation, as well as Tennis South Africa Board Member Petras Abraham visited the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Jabavu on Wednesday afternoon in order to meet the beneficiaries of the donation.
But upon arrival, Lebo M was so moved by the number of kids that he decided to up his donation from R10 000 to R50 000 Rand saying “I am a little embarrassed that I’ve got my little R10 000. So what! That’s nothing. I can do more. I want to do more. It’s about changing young people’s lives. It’s about keeping them away from the streets. The infrastructure is here.” Lebo, who hails from Soweto, is calling on all the Afropolitans to do their bit to assist the kids that are part of Tennis South Africa’s Development Programme at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre “It’s not funny. It’s embarrassing that someone came from like Arthur Ashe came from the other side of the world, risked his career to build this facility which continues to change lives and there isn’t even a toilet named after Lebo M and I’m from here. We must do more.” Plans are afoot between the Lebo M Foundation, Tennis South Africa and Kaya FM to host a fundraiser, the proceeds of which will go towards sponsoring more kids at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre.
