Ikusasa lami was already conceptualized in 2005 when the National Minister of Education (Minister Naledi Pandor) was approached with the idea for the project. In 2007 the Gauteng MEC for Education agreed that the program could be launched at selected schools in 2008. Ikusasa Lami will be Gauteng Goverment's flagship program from 2008!

Kaya FM 95.9 is partnering with Ikusasa Lami to create mentoring programmes for the youth within the private sector. The programme aims to address the skills shortage we have by identifying talent and match this with the workplace needs.

50 Schools have been selected and 1000 students will be placed in the 2008 programme.

Today's Talent - Tomorrow's Skills

Skills development is a global phenomenon with major shortages being experienced in disciplines such as engineering, science and accounting. It is a challenge that cannot be confined to the public sector or specific industries within the private sector. In the interests of nation building, it remains a nationwide challenge.

Furthermore, whilst it often falls within the ambit of a CSI initiative, once again, it should not be confined to a company's CSI department but should transcend each facet of an organisation's business. In South Africa, the politics of BEE is here to stay. Whatever the field, BEE can be made to work so much better if at a grassroots level, the necessary skills get nurtured and developed at a formative stage.

Whilst much investment is applied to CSI, a lot of it does NOT achieve real value and effect. Programs get badly administered due to inept structures and bottlenecks. Due to South Africa's illicit past, raw talent exists in the township and rural areas but due to living circumstances, the affinity, understanding and life skills with respect to first world structures and technologies that are so necessary to succeed, do not exist.

We need more companies to participate!

The Department of Education is intent on placing 30, 000 kids on the program over the next 3 years which is going to be a HUGE task given the fact that we have not as yet fully managed to place all 1, 000 of the kids for 2008.

If you have not as yet committed to taking on Learners, please accept our challenge to do so.

How it works?
Ikusasa Lami requires participating companies to implement Job Shadowing while the learner/s are in their "employ".

Job shadowing is a process where learners get a chance to explore various careers beyond what their parents do for a living. It also gives them an opportunity to get exposure to various career options they otherwise might not have a chance to explore. Job shadowing provides the answer to the question: "why do I have to learn this".

In this process learners are placed in a work environment to acquire work experience by shadowing an experienced employee. In most instances, job shadowing is a temporary and unpaid exposure to the workplace in an occupational area (s) of interest to the learners. Therefore, job shadowing is different to mentorship as the latter takes place between an experienced and inexperienced employee.

Ikusasa Lami job shadowing is the most appropriate process to expose learners to the various critical careers and the world of work.

For more information on Job Shadowing please contact Rob HAYNE.

Ikusasa Lami Launch

On the 14th May 2008 Ikusasa Lami was launched as the biggest grassroots, skills development program of its kind in South Africa.

The day was a rousing success; the learners impressed with their behaviour, responsiveness and general enthusiasm. They have high aspirations and are looking forward to quality engagements with their respective Host Companies.
