Kaya FM Line — Up Sound Supreme
By Nomali Cele
When Greg Maloka, Kaya FM M.D, announced the changes in the Kaya FM line up in April, a music show called “Sound Supreme” was a big part of the change.
When Sound Supreme launched on 6 May at MESH in Rosebank, a collective sigh could almost be heard across the city: finally, we don’t have to go to the club to hear gifted turntablists at work! There comes a time where the club isn’t the most convenient place to get your good music fix but thanks to the birth of Sound Supreme, 2 – 6 PM on a Saturday has become the best place to get a dose of good music.
What is Sound Supreme?
Sound Supreme is a music show with a twist. For four hours, the listener is treated to rare mixes from music aficionados and turntablists: DJ Kenzhero, Tha Muzik, Just Themba and The Rhythm Sessions. Sometimes, through interviews and profiles, the guys introduce new artists they think Afropolitans should know and support.
Who is Sound Supreme?
Sound Supreme is made up of four turntable acts that have spent years honing their ears and skills. Once a month, the first Saturday of the month, Sound Supreme broadcasts live from MESH in Rosebank, which has helped bring the Sound Supreme experience to life.
2 – 3 PM on Sound Supreme
The first hour of Sound Supreme belongs to DJ Kenzhero, a man who needs no introduction. In fact, he’s something of a savant to those who love live music mixes but who longer have the patience for an evening at the club just to hear that perfect sequence of tracks. DJ Kenzhero is a legend of Johannesburg nightlife.
3 – 4 PM on Sound Supreme
Tha Muzik has various interests, which include music eventing and live experiences. Musically, his style leans towards the jazzy sounds. He’s also come to be known by the Sound Supreme audience as the guy that will have some latin fusion in his set., which makes for an always-refreshing set.
4 – 5 PM on Sound Supreme
If the streets (the #KayaSoundSupreme hashtag on Twitter to be exact) are to be believed, the thing Just Themba does well in his mixes is folding in a surprise. But because his touch is so delicate and his ear so astute, the surprising music moment during Just Themba’s hour on Sound Supreme is always followed with “of course.”
5 – 6 PM on Sound Supreme
Edsoul and Fang DaRhythm, who make up The Rhythm Sessions, are music collectors first. They count deck legends such as Oskido, Fresh, Vinny da Vinci and Louie Vega as their inspiration and when they close out Sound Supreme, the house-meets-the-world influence shows. The duo, in the last hour of Sound Supreme, kicks #KayaWeeknds into high gear.
Don’t miss Sound Supreme every Saturday between 2 and 6 PM.
